Here are the TOP TEN reasons why individuals choose to become snowbirds:

Most of know this one—the primary reason for snowbirding is to AVOID the miserable, freezing, teeth-jittering, neck-tightening, down-right sometimes dangerous, but mostly just extremely inconvenient COLD. Wanting to avoid the cold, snow, and ice prevalent in northern regions during the winter, many people find the idea of spending winter in a warmer climate immensely appealing.

No. 2 Mental Health Benefits

Exposure to natural sunlight and warmer temperatures can positively impact mental health and emotional health. Snowbirds often report feeling happier and more relaxed during their winter stay, contributing to an overall improved quality of life. Have you ever considered checking your Vitamin D levels. I use (not affiliated) Grassroots Health Nutrient Research Institute. (Speaking of, I should order my annual test kit this week.)

No. 3 Physical Health

Warmer climates are beneficial for health, especially for individuals with conditions like arthritis or respiratory issues. The milder temperatures and increased sun exposure can contribute to overall improved well-being. Get just a little closer to those anti-aging “Blue Zones”. It pretty much boils down to this: Naturally, warmer weather encourages more physical activity—more walking, more biking, more swimming, and more skin showing….which motivates for all of the above. See, it’s a gentle wellness cycle!

No. 4 Avoid Ground-Hog Day

I’m sure you have heard someone say “I love the changing seasons!”? Known as seasonal affiliation some people enjoy the distinct change of seasons yet prefer to SKIP the harsh winter or a particularly long winter (Minnesota, I’m looking at you). Seasonal snowbirds get to experience the beauty of changing seasons, you know the ones—spring, summer, fall (and maybe even a couple months of winter) in their primary residence while avoiding the coldest months.

No. 5 Outdoor Activities

Warmer climates are often perceived as beneficial for health, especially for individuals with conditions like arthritis or respiratory issues. The milder temperatures and increased sun exposure can contribute to overall improved well-being. It’s like those anti-aging “Blue Zones”. It boils down to this: warmer weather naturally encourages more physical activity. More walking, more biking, more swimming, and more skin showing (which also motivates the former.)

No. 6 Become a more interesting person

Experience different cultures and recreational opportunities. Get to know people who haven’t been raised in the same culture as you. Consider the continent of North America, they say there are nine nations within the continent. Snowbird destinations often offer a rich cultural scene, including art exhibits, music festivals, and local events.

No. 7 Retirement Lifestyle

Many retirees become snowbirds as a way to enjoy their retirement years in a more relaxed and enjoyable environment. The snowbird lifestyle allows for a mix of leisure and adventure. Retirees, in particular, appreciate the chance to explore new cultural experiences.

No. 8 Family & Social Connections

Some individuals have family or friends who are also snowbirds, and the shared experience of wintering in a warmer locale provides an opportunity for regular socializing and family gatherings.

No. 9 Reduced Cost of Living

Ever considered retirement in Vietnam? In some cases, snowbirds choose destinations where the cost of living is lower. This can result in a more affordable lifestyle, allowing them to stretch their budget and enjoy a higher standard of living. Well…you don’t say?!

Bonus! Work Remotely (Digital Nomads)

My very first remote position was teaching English online. I was between in-classroom contracts and living and traveling around Southeast Asia. When I came back to The States in 2020, I landed another remote position as a Customer Success Manager for a regional solar company. That was it—I was hooked. Upon getting laid off in early 2023, I knew exactly how I wanted to toggle those job search filters.

Location: “Remote”

Have you considered changing jobs? Or maybe you’ve recently scored a remote position since the Technology Shift of 2020 (aka Covid)? What’s holding you back from finding your winter wings?
